For centuries, the silent volcano had slept— until, without warning, it erupted, spewing fire. As they fled from the scorching lava of the apocalypse, they forgot one thing: They were The Ones on the Brink! God had trusted humankind. The beings once commanded to be bowed before by the angels would never bring disgrace. Even if demons rained from the sky, the children born of the earth would not stray from the path. That was why God had given the fiery child the chance demanded. But it did not happen that way… Humanity had long since abandoned God! As the Devil roamed the earth, proving the frailty of those who refused to kneel, God reached out to the children once more… and granted them one last chance. The Ones on the Brink were, in truth, God’s Lights! One could see the future, another roamed freely through the corridors of time. One could slip into minds, while for another, commanding the elements was child’s play. One wandered in the guise of beasts, another could scent from miles away. One could heal, another could defy death itself. The Ones on the Brink were at once very much alike, and nothing alike at all. When God’s Lights came together, volcanoes erupted, and the Devil played the final cards. These eight, who chose to wield what God had given for God’s cause, defied the apocalypse while journeying toward their own destinies. They wrestled with secrets about their own lives, and they came to know the mind-toppling power of love. This journey carried them to an inescapable end. For some, it was the final journey; for others, the first step toward new beginnings. After all, which of us has not stood at the edge of that brink?
